Best Time to Visit Prague: A Season-by-Season Guide

·

Prague has something special in every season: spring markets, summer evenings by the river, golden leaves in the fall and the magic of snow in winter. The best time to visit Prague depends on what you’re after: fewer crowds and lower prices, or the buzz of high season. Here’s what to expect throughout the year.

Spring market in Prague, one of the best times to visit the city

Spring (March to May): the best all-around choice

For many travelers, spring is the best time to visit Prague. Temperatures start to rise, gardens and parks bloom, and the streets come back to life without the summer crowds.

  • Mild temperatures, between 10°C and 18°C (50–64°F)
  • Fewer crowds than in summer
  • Easter markets on Old Town Square (late March and April)
  • Hotel prices still reasonable

Summer (June to August): high season

Summer brings the longest days and the best weather for walking, but also the biggest crowds. If you’re visiting in these months, book tours and accommodation early.

  • Temperatures between 18°C and 25°C (64–77°F), with the occasional hotter day
  • Terraces, Vltava river cruises and nightlife in full swing
  • The busiest time at Charles Bridge and in the Old Town, especially around midday
  • Higher prices for flights and hotels

Tip: in summer, see the busiest sights, like Charles Bridge or the Astronomical Clock, first thing in the morning. Booking a free walking tour in advance also makes sure you get a spot in high season.

Fall (September to November): colors and calm

September and the first half of October rank with spring as the best times to visit Prague: good weather, fewer tourists than in summer and a city turned gold and red by its parks and gardens.

Prague in the fall, with golden leaves in the city's streets and parks
  • Temperatures between 8°C and 18°C (46–64°F), dropping toward November
  • Clear views from Petřín Lookout Tower or the Castle
  • A calmer atmosphere in the streets of the historic center

Winter (December to February): fairy-tale Prague

December brings one of the best Christmas markets in Europe, with Old Town Square lit up and decorated. January and February are the coldest and quietest months, ideal if you want low prices and a more local experience.

  • Temperatures between -2°C and 5°C (28–41°F), with a chance of snow
  • Christmas markets throughout December
  • Fewer tourists in January and February
  • Shorter days, with fewer daylight hours for sightseeing

So when should you go?

For the best balance of weather, prices and crowds, spring and fall are the seasons to choose. If you love the holiday atmosphere, December is unforgettable. And if saving money is your priority, January and February have the lowest prices of the year.

Whatever season you pick, a guided free walking tour is a great way to get to know the city at a pace that suits the weather. To plan what to see, check out our Prague itinerary for 2, 3 or 4 days.
